Recently, Nissan has revealed the Nichio Maru, an energy efficient coastal car carrier. In the past, coastal car carriers have been large sources of CO2 emissions. In order to make the Nichio Maru as energy efficient as possible, Nissan has equipped the carrier with solar panels, an electronically controlled diesel engine and even LED lights. These decisions and others have helped Nissan cut down on the large mark that would typically be left on the environment by a ship like this. A little more than a year ago, the Nichio Maru made its first trip from Japan. According to Nissan, the Nichio Maru is projected to annually reduce CO2 emissions by 4,200 tons. It does all this while being able to carry almost 1,400 cars and making two round trips each week.
While the Nichio Maru is impressive, it is not the only energy efficient car carrier.
